Akron Community Foundation’s 23 board members serve without pay as stewards of our fundholders’ charitable resources.

They’re experienced

Our board members come from diverse backgrounds, including business, law, finance, health care, education and the public sector, which strengthens the community foundation’s committee dialogue. They meet quarterly to review and approve grants, oversee the community foundation’s finances, and develop creative ways of empowering fundholders, nonprofits and charitably inclined citizens in greater Akron to do good.

Mike Zeleznik has more than 30 years of experience as a CPA and licensed life insurance advisor.  His expertise is broad and includes business and estate planning, wealth transfer, business succession planning, business valuation, estate and income taxation, and litigation consulting/expert witness matters. In addition to his professional experience, Mike has also volunteered with the Society of Financial Service Professionals, the Regional Prosperity Initiative, the Tax & Estate Planning Council of Akron and the American Heart Association of Akron’s Heart Ball.

With more than 30 years of experience in the energy industry, Dee Lowery has held a series of management positions within FirstEnergy Corp. In her current roles as president of the FirstEnergy Foundation and vice president of corporate affairs and community involvement, Dee is responsible for strengthening the social and economic fabric of FirstEnergy communities. Dee is a graduate of Leadership Akron and serves on committees for the American Heart Association of Akron’s Heart Walk, Heart Ball and Go Red for Women Luncheon.

A partner at Brouse McDowell, Mark Krohn is an attorney with more than 15 years of experience  representing businesses in critical strategic initiatives, including planning, growth, contract negotiation, succession planning, risk management, asset protection and synergistic partnerships. In addition to his role at Brouse McDowell, Mark has ownership and leadership roles at four companies. He is a graduate of Leadership Akron and has served on the boards of the United Way of Summit County and the Summa Foundation.

Robert Cooper is a local entrepreneur who has spent most of his career in real estate. He currently owns CREM Real Estate Properties and works for CBRE Real Estate. Robert received a bachelor’s degree and two graduate degrees from the University of Miami in Florida. He currently serves as a board member for Akron General Partners, Akron Children’s Hospital, Cascade Capital, FirstMerit Bank, Summit County Board of Zoning Appeals, United Way and The University of Akron Research Foundation.

Vivian Neal has a vast background in the education field, working for Akron Public Schools, The University of Akron and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation prior to retiring. She has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education from Clarion State University and The University of Akron, respectively. Vivian is currently serving on the boards of Summa Health System Foundation and Akron Children’s Hospital.

Since 2000, Rev. Sandy Selby has served the Akron community as a pastor, chaplain and educator. As an on-call chaplain at Akron Children’s Hospital, she counsels families in crisis. She also participates in community chaplaincy through Furnace Street Mission, serving law enforcement officers, hospitals and social service agencies. Sandy is on the board of Visiting Nurse Service and serves on the Summit County Social Services Advisory Board and the Bridges Out of Poverty Advisory Council.

Robert Reffner is the vice president of FirstEnergy’s legal department. He practiced law as a partner at Brouse McDowell for more than 25 years and is an expert in business mergers, acquisitions and venture capital transactions. Bob has experience in many different business sectors, including energy, steel and automotives. He is a longtime community leader and currently serves on the boards of Akron Tomorrow, Invent Now, Summit Education Initiative and the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education, of which he is the chairman.

Rob Malone is an attorney specializing in business law, taxation, mergers and acquisitions, and trusts and estates. He has been a partner at Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs for 30 years and has been recognized as one of Ohio’s Super Lawyers®.  Rob serves on the faculty of the University of Akron’s Master of Taxation program and is a board member for Leadership Akron and the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges.

As the co-founder of Stark & Knoll, an Akron-area law firm, Tom Knoll specializes in corporate, real estate and business succession planning.  For more than 45 years, he has worked with clients in the manufacturing, distribution, management and pharmaceuticals industries. Tom is a longtime supporter of the nonprofit community and is the co-founder of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Akron and First Tee of Akron. He is the chair of SummaCare/Summa Insurance Company and a trustee of GAR Foundation.

Formerly an academic advisor at the University of Akron, Susan Kinnamon is an active volunteer in the community. In addition to being a Junior League Sustainer, she has served on the boards of multiple agencies, including the Akron Garden Club, University of Akron Alumni Association, Akron Children’s Hospital Women’s Board, and Cascade Locks Park Association. Susan is also a member of the 2011 Charter Class of Leadership Akron’s N.E.X.T. program.

Board member since 2012

Dr. Sarah Friebert is a nationally recognized expert in pediatric palliative care. She founded and oversees Akron Children’s Hospital’s pediatric palliative care center, which helps families navigate life-threatening illnesses from diagnosis through bereavement. A professor of pediatrics at NEOMED, Dr. Friebert is also the founder of the Ohio Pediatric Palliative and End-of-life Care Network, a statewide coalition representing pediatric hospice and palliative care providers. As a community volunteer, she serves on the professional advisory council of The Gathering Place.

An expert in business management, Bill Feth is the former CEO of Aesco Electronics, an electronic component distributor and contract manufacturer based in Akron. In addition to his professional affiliations, Bill serves as board vice chair of the United Way of Summit County and is a member of Akron General Health System’s Finance Committee. He previously served as chairman of the Salvation Army in Summit County.

Ed is heavily involved in the nonprofit community, serving on the boards of the University of Akron, Greater Akron Chamber, INROADS Northeast Ohio and many others.

Sam DeShazior specializes in business development and urban planning. While working for the Greater Akron Chamber, he managed projects ranging from industrial business expansions to international joint ventures. As part of his role as the city’s deputy planning director, Sam travels around the world to bring business investments to northeast Ohio. He is active in the community, currently serving on the boards of Summit Workforce Solutions and the Akron Biomedical Corridor.

A native of Guyana, Olivia Demas is an active volunteer in the greater Akron community. In addition to Akron Community Foundation, Olivia serves on the board of the University of Akron and the Akron Bar Association. She has co-chaired the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women luncheon. Olivia is an alumna of the University of Akron where she earned her bachelor's degree in Chemistry and her Juris Doctorate.

Eileen Burg is one of Akron’s most active volunteers and philanthropists. She currently serves on the Palliative Care Advisory Board at Akron Children’s Hospital and is a member of the University of Akron Foundation board. Eileen has also chaired many local fundraisers, including the food bank’s Harvest for Hunger campaign and the American Heart Association’s Circle of Red. She is a registered nurse and a graduate of the University of Akron.

Marilyn Buckey is president and treasurer of Akron-based investment company W.E. Wright Co. In addition to being a finance and investment expert, she is a longtime community volunteer. Marilyn has a special interest in children’s education programs and has served on the boards of many nonprofits, including Old Trail School and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve. She is also a past president of the Akron Rotary Foundation.

Tommy Bruno is a media professional specializing in broadcast journalism. During his tenure with Cleveland’s Fox 8 News, Tommy spent six years produced the station’s programming. Today, he is best known for his work in public radio as the general manager of 91.3 FM The Summit. Tommy is a graduate of John Carroll University and is a member of Leadership Akron Class XXVI.

He has served on the boards of many local nonprofit organizations, including the Salvation Army, Summit County Historical Society and the United Way of Summit County.

As president and CEO of FedEx Custom Critical, Virginia Albanese is an expert in business operations and strategic planning. She previously led the company’s customer service and safety departments, where she became known for her ability to streamline processes with innovative technologies. Virginia is the chairwoman of the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce and serves on the boards of Akron Children’s Hospital and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve.

Judge Carla Moore is a judge of the Ninth District Court of Appeals in Akron. In addition to previously serving on the Akron Municipal Court, Judge Moore practiced as an attorney in the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. She is a proponent of judicial education and spent more than 10 years teaching at the Ohio Judicial College. Judge Moore serves on the board of Leadership Akron and is a past board member of Akron Children’s Hospital, the Akron Bar Association and many others.

Paul most recently served as board chairman of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve.

He also serves on the board of Akron Children’s Hospital and is chairman of the Bluecoats.

He is a longtime supporter of Akron-area nonprofits, including the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.
