Funding includes nearly $600,000 in civic affairs grants

Akron Community Foundation's board of directors announced nearly $4.5 million in quarterly grants and distributions, benefiting hundreds of nonprofits.

The board approved 53 competitive civic affairs grants totaling nearly $600,000 that were chosen by the foundation's Community Investment Committee.

Included in this round of civic affairs awards is a $26,000 grant to Akron 200 Inc., which is planning for the citywide celebration of Akron's bicentennial in 2025. Yearlong events will take place across the community, including concerts, theater performances, a bike-a-thon, a Bicentennial Soap Box Derby race, and neighborhood-specific celebrations, along with the opening of the Akron History Center in downtown Akron.

"Our vision is to have an intergenerational celebration that really galvanizes and engages all communities, all neighborhoods and all sectors of Akron," said Mark Greer, executive director of Akron 200. More information about the City of Akron Bicentennial is available at akron200.org.

Truly Reaching You will receive a $12,750 civic affairs grant to help the nonprofit provide resources like housing, career training and mentorship for men recently released from incarceration or substance abuse treatment. The nonprofit has been successfully serving the community for 25 years and provides everything from clothing and hygiene items to transportation and household supplies for its clients, as well as employment training. "It's been wonderful to see the transformation of the men's lives who are coming back into the community," said Perry Clark, president and founder of Truly Reaching You.

The Charles E. and Mary K. Booth Family Fund, the Howard Atwood Family Fund and an anonymous fundholder contributed $26,300 of the civic affairs funding through the community foundation's grant co-investment program, which enables donor-advised fundholders to review the board's competitive grant applications and support initiatives that align with their charitable interests.
