Generous families and businesses all over Summit County are helping students get an education through scholarship funds at Akron Community Foundation.

It was her younger brother’s battle with cancer that led Erika Webber to discover her passion for nursing. During his chemotherapy, she kept herself busy by researching medications and observing the nurses on duty. Their dedication to her brother’s health soon inspired Erika to follow in their footsteps.

"Several years ago, my mom discovered she had a brain tumor. She had surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, which was only partially covered by insurance. My dad lost his job and was downsized several times."

A scholarship fund at Akron Community Foundation is carrying on the legacy of a local hero. Established in 2010, the Dante B. and Joy W. Lavelli Athletic Academic Scholarship Fund honors the career of the Browns football legend by helping athletes at Hudson High School – Lavelli’s alma mater – attend college.
