Philip H. Maynard

Philip MaynardPhilip H. Maynard is an Akronite through and through. He graduated from Archbishop Hoban High School, studied political science at Kent State University and, in 1963, enlisted in the U.S. Army Intelligence Agency, serving four years in the Far East.

In 1967, he began studying at The University of Akron. He also took a job as a dock worker at Akron Storage and Warehouse, moving up the ranks from supervisor to manager to the president’s assistant.

In 1981, he purchased what would become ASW International, which the Wall Street Journal featured in 1992 for its role in the growth of the polymer industry.

Today, Maynard serves the community as a board member of Leadership Akron and as board chairman of Akron Children's Hospital Foundation. He is a past chairman and active alumnus of Archbishop Hoban High School's board of trustees, which – like The University of Akron – honored him with its distinguished alumni award.

But, Maynard’s history of volunteerism doesn’t begin or end in the board room. He has touched countless lives through his work with the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, East Akron Community House, Haven of Rest Ministries, Opportunity Parish Ecumenical Neighborhood Ministry, Heart to Heart Communications, Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service and the local Boy Scouts, which gave him its Community Service Award in 2006.

In 2007, a group of past Polsky Award honorees named him the 40th recipient of the humanitarian award.
