Pamela Valentine

Hidden Philanthropist Award, The Soul of Philanthropy Akron

Though not a Summit County native, Pamela Valentine has been deeply involved in the Greater Akron community for decades. Pamela graduated from the University of Akron and stayed in the community to build her career in corporate finance and accounting — one of the few Black women in such a role at that time. Simultaneously, she built a reputation for her steadfast dedication to civic and community organizations.

A trailblazer in the corporate world, Pamela empowers and mentors others, especially young women, encouraging them not only to further their education and achieve in their careers, but to better their community, too. She does this both formally and informally, through organizations like the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Women's Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation.

Since 2007, Pamela has been a pillar of Project GRAD Akron, serving in a variety of board leadership roles and actively guiding its mission to elevate young learners and foster educational equity. Long before her Project GRAD Akron journey began, Pamela was deeply involved in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She held key leadership roles, including General Treasurer of the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society and District President, and continues to serve as treasurer for Wesley Temple AME Zion Church. She also facilitates the Women of the Word bible study — all underscoring her dedication to faith-driven community outreach and the well-being of women and children.

Her long-time board and community service work helped her transition to nonprofit work for the final phase of her professional career — fundraising for the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio.

In addition to those listed previously, numerous organizations have benefitted from Pamela's quiet, steady leadership over the years — from ATHENA Akron to the Shaw JCC Akron to Child Guidance & Family Solutions. And Pamela does not just give of her time; she is a leadership contributor to many of the organizations she serves.

Pamela Valentine's ability to uplift organizations through governance, stewardship and mentorship continues to make Akron stronger, more inclusive and full of opportunity for future generations.
