Nonprofit Spotlight: First Glance

First Glance has been a Kenmore staple for more than 25 years, offering a place where local teens can find a sense of belonging, support and stability. Many of the teens it serves are navigating difficult circumstances, including teen parenthood and housing insecurity.
"First Glance exists to be a safe, welcoming place for students, moms and families – especially those who feel overlooked, overwhelmed or unsure where they belong," said Jessica Swiger, executive director of First Glance. "We build authentic relationships and meet people where they are, offering consistent presence, support and hope. Everything we do is rooted in showing up, listening well, and helping young people know they matter."
Over the years, Akron Community Foundation and its fundholders have awarded more than 50 grants to support First Glance's mission of uplifting students in Kenmore. The nonprofit serves about 500 babies, children and teens each year through 10 different programs, including a daily after-school program for elementary school students in the Kenmore cluster.
Some of its other programs include Rec Night, Ladies Night Out, Hip-Hop Night, and Tiny Glancers, which prepares children to be successful in school. The organization even offers a seasonal indoor skate park, where skateboarders can build their skills and connect with caring adults.
Swiger said First Glance's staff and volunteers live in the neighborhood and approach their work as mentors, walking alongside the young people they support.
"What motivates me most are the students and moms we serve," she said. "Watching them slowly begin to trust, find their voice, or realize they're not alone is incredibly powerful. I'm also deeply motivated by our team and volunteers, who show up every day with patience, compassion and commitment. Knowing our work creates real, lasting impact keeps me going, even on the hard days."
