Dorothy made history in 1984, when then City of Akron Mayor Tom Sawyer appointed her to serve as Deputy Mayor for Intergovernmental Relations, making her the first African American woman to serve in the mayor's office. Over her tenure with the mayor's office, she directed housing, neighborhood revitalization and public service programs that continue to shape Akron's communities today. Her leadership was marked by a commitment to inclusion, fairness and ensuring that government worked for those most in need.
