Nonprofit spotlight: First Glance

First Glance has been a Kenmore staple for more than 25 years, offering a place for local teens to feel a sense of belonging, many of them seeking a stable environment in an otherwise unstable situation, whether it's gang activity, teen motherhood or homelessness.

"First Glance exists to be a safe, welcoming place for students, moms, and families—especially those who feel overlooked, overwhelmed, or unsure where they belong," said Jessica Swiger, executive director of First Glance. "We build authentic relationships and meet people where they are, offering consistent presence, support, and hope. Everything we do is rooted in showing up, listening well, and helping young people know they matter."

The nonprofit, an ACF grantee, serves around 500 people a year, through 10 different programs offered to participants ranging in age from infants to young adults, including a daily after school program for elementary school students in the Kenmore cluster. Some of the other programs include rec nights, "Ladies Night Out," "The Connect" -- a program for moms and families, Hip-Hop Night, a summer camp and Tiny Glancers, which prepares children to be successful in school. Another unique First Glance amenity is a customized skateboard park located on the first floor. And the staff and volunteers live in the neighborhood and consider themselves on equal footing with the young people they serve.

When asked what motivates her each day, Swiger said, "What motivates me most is the students and moms we serve. Watching them slowly begin to trust, find their voice, or realize they're not alone is incredibly powerful. I'm also deeply motivated by our team and volunteers—people who show up with patience, compassion, and commitment. Knowing our work creates real, lasting impact keeps me going, even on the hard days."
