GCEF announces new impact grant program

AKRON, Ohio (Oct. 18, 2018) – Beginning in November 2018, the Gay Community Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation will launch a new impact grant program to boost funding for initiatives that improve the health and well-being of the LGBTQ+ community.

The impact grants are part of the fund’s strategic planning efforts to grow the endowment and advance a lived equality for all LGBTQ+ people in Greater Akron.

Strong preference will be given to impact grant proposals that create safer environments for LGBTQ+ youth, combat phobias of the LGBTQ+ community, and support mental health and suicide prevention programs for LGBTQ+ people. In addition to these areas of focus, micro grant proposals will also be accepted for a wider range of programs that benefit the LGBTQ+ community, including but not limited to the arts, community events and nonprofit operational needs.

Applications for the new grant cycle will open Nov. 15 and are due Dec. 15. A link to apply is available at www.akroncf.org/ApplyGCEF. Nonprofits may apply for either an impact grant or a micro grant, with impact grants starting at $10,000 and micro grants starting at $1,000. Separate applications will be available for each type of grant, and decisions will be announced in early March.

“This new grantmaking approach allows us to strategically concentrate our funding on programs that will make a significant difference for the LGBTQ+ community,” said Phil Montgomery, GCEF advisory board chair. “Our goal is to invest in initiatives that promote systemic change and advance the LGBTQ+ community toward a future of full inclusion and equity.”

Questions about the application process should be directed to John Garofalo, Akron Community Foundation’s vice president of community investment, at 330-436-5624 or jgarofalo@akroncf.org
