A message from GCEF's board chair

Last year, our annual meeting theme was “Moving Forward.” GCEF has indeed moved forward, and we are now embracing telling the story of our diverse community while “Investing in Our Future.”

Through storytelling, we build awareness and enhance inclusivity and acceptance. Thus, with the artistry of photographer Shane Wynn and word-savvy writer H.L. Comeriato, the Gay Community Endowment Fund embarked on phase one of our storytelling project, TransAkron, which will be unveiled at our annual meeting on April 19.

A prime avenue for positive change is to know or learn from someone personally. Through the telling and writing of personal stories, we are investing in the future of our community and building leaders through our scholarship fund.

In 2017, the GCEF Scholarship Fund awarded $5,800 to three students attending local universities. GCEF also invested $39,000 in grants into programs that positively impact the LGBTQ community and Greater Akron as a whole. Grants supported youth in the arts, health and senior services, local theater productions, community outreach projects and more.

On a personal note, I want to thank the GCEF board, Akron Community Foundation, local leaders, our sponsors and the community for their support during my tenure on the board and as advisory board chair. As my nine-year term on the board ends, I am proud of the collective efforts we’ve made to move forward and invest in our future.

I will continue to be a proud supporter of the Gay Community Endowment Fund and Akron Community Foundation. My message to you is to get involved and stay involved in all things you feel strongly about. Thank you for your support.
